The History of BBC Tv Idents

The BBC first launched its television service in 1936, but quickly went off air in 1939 do to the war. The return of the BBC came in June 1945 and because it was the only channel being broadcasted in Britain, and at one time the world, there was no need to have a Tv ident to represent the channel. However in the early 1950s with the news of ITV being evident, the BBC felt it was necessary to create its first Tv Ident. This Tv ident was built as an intricate mechanicle sculpture that included a moving globe in the center, surrounded by two spinning eyes with a wing on either side, nicknamed the "Bat Wings". The Ident was made by Abrab Games and unlike todays digitally made idents, this ident was filmed and then aired.
